Going Deep

Going Deep

In 1 Corinthians 2:10, the apostle Paul (by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit) writes:

For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.

This verse begins by saying “For to us . . . .” what the context of this passage and the following verses proclaim is that we (us) who know the Lord Jesus and are known by Him, have this Holy Spirit - the Spirit Who “searches all things.” This word “searches” in the Greek text means to “search out, track down and examine.”

What, specifically, the Lord wants us to know is that the Spirit living within us wants to take us into “the depths of God.” We all know that God is “deep.” There is an inexhaustible amount of knowledge and experience with God that is available to us.

Off the eastern coast of the Philippine islands is a trough in the ocean floor known as “The Philippine Deep.” This is the deepest part of any ocean on the earth. If you were to take Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world and drop it into the Philippine Deep, there would still be more than a mile of water above it! No one has every been in its depths. God is deeper than the Philippine Deep!

And just as mankind has devised an apparatus to go down deeper than human can go, God has devised the Holy Spirit to take us into His depths.

There is one other New Testament verse that gives us some clues about what is meant by “the depths of God.” Romans 11:33-

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!

Four of the things God wants us to take us down into are:

  • The riches of His wisdom

  • The riches of the knowledge of Him

  • His judgments

  • HIs ways

Oh that we might continually pray and experience the depths of God. He awaits to take us deeper!
